Mesembryanthemum sp.

Mesembryanthemum sp.

Several species of Mesembryanthemum can be seen growing on Madeira and Porto Santo. Many of these, such as Mesembryanthemum crystallinum (the "Ice Plant") which was once grown commercially for the extraction of soda, will have originally been introduced by man. The photograph shows an unidentified species (similar to Carpobrotus) in a huge colony on the upper slopes of Pico de Castelo on Porto Santo.
