Our eleven meetings each year (2nd Wednesday of each
month except August) are the mainstay of our activities. We average somewhere
around twenty numerically and have a wide age range with representatives
of both sexes. There is no admission
charge at the meetings, though members
are encouraged to buy raffle tickets which help cover the cost of the room rent and
speaker's expenses.
Although most of our meetings are talks by visiting speakers (some of whom bring plants for sale), usually accompanied by a slide show, they are not normally highly technical so you should not be put off by fears of being snubbed by a group of serious botanists - far from it! |

As well as the talks we have our AGM in November
followed by either member's photographs or occasionally a plant sale. Another
regular feature is our annual "Bring & Buy" night -
see separate page for more information.
Periodically we have an "in-house" night of short talks and demonstrations covering the basics of cultivation - this is not just for the newer members, no-one is too old or experienced to learn! Another popular regular slot is the annual quiz against Northumbria Branch..... |

The quiz nights have been a regular feature for several
years now, hosted in alternate years by ourselves and Northumbria Branch. Don't
worry, only those who allow themselves to be included in the teams are put on
the spot, the rest can try to answer the questions in private or just sit back
and heckle! Of course everyone, team members and spectators alike, get to sample
the food in the interval.
Once in a while we get to celebrate a special event, maybe the presentation of a Society honour to a hard working member or, as shown below some other occasion. In this case Bill Maddam's cutting of a cake in honour of the Branch's 35th anniversary in October 1993. (See separate page for our 50th anniversary celebration event). |
